The Elastic Past: Visual Interpretations of Life’s Early Lessons

August 15, 2013 - October 27, 2013

We all have memories from childhood of objects or incidents that had a tremendous impact on us.  Perhaps the revelation of alternative meanings for those experiences have dawned on us only recently.  The Elastic Past: Visual Interpretations of Life’s Early Lessons examines childhood memories, toys, significant childhood objects, play, and serious humor. The four participating artists, who all have ties in the northwestern part of the country, take a fresh, critical look at lessons familiar to all of us to reveal alternative and occasionally less than benevolent intentions.  Yet, The Elastic Past has an undeniably nostalgic side to it, and for those who fondly recall childhood, there will be much to touch the heart.  These works will call to mind the stories, games, and playthings through which we all learned about life when we were young.
