Elegant Repose

The Yellowstone Art Museum is grateful to an anonymous lender for the opportunity to share these precious objects that illustrate differing stylistic approaches to introspective subjects at rest or play—ranging from the idyllic pastimes of the upper classes to the more “decadent” pursuits in the Jazz Age. The contrasts of these objects is striking when considering the radical ascent of the Expressionist movement in Northern Europe during two World Wars. When thinking about just one concept—beauty and its relevance—it becomes clear that groundwork laid in the late 19th and early 20th centuries continue to inform, challenge, and define artistic production.
