Ken Blackbird (Assiniboine, Gros Ventre) grew up on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. After leaving the reservation at age nineteen, he worked a succession of jobs as a welder in Texas and as a forest ranger (and emergency firefighter) in Yellowstone National Park.
